Excellent Read

The Dark Jason Brant

The Dark Jason Brant

I have always prided myself as being brave and having been raised on horror since I was a kid I felt nothing could spook me. Boy was I wrong! Jason Brant did an exceptional job with this book! I was enthralled from the first chapter and never once did I loose interest. I even went in to work 4 hours late because I couldn't put it down... If you aren't scared of the dark read this.. you will be! One character in the book was saved from "The Dark" by the light on her Kindle. I now keep mine on charge and lit up all night! You never know what lurks in the dark! Read this and maybe you will have a better idea! I like all of Jason Brant's books but this one by far is my favorite! He captures the characters so well and I found myself rooting for the small band of people caught in The Dark and saddened if they didn't make it. If this book was twice as long I never would have gotten bored!

Britax Frontier SICT Booster Seat

Britax Frontier SICT Booster Seat

We spent a lot of time and effort looking at different options for car seat replacements - we have another britax in one of our car and another brand in another. This was a replacement for a small chair that our 4yr had outgrown. We did the usual looking at all the major baby and dept stores - looking at both the construction and the material the currently available chairs. I can say I was disappointed with the selection - there are some cheaper chairs available but none of them compared to the britax brand and nothing compared to the Frontier 85 SICT. We are very happy with our choice in this chair. Our 4yr old also makes comments about his new car seat - and how comfortable he feels in it.

Installation is easy - just rest the manual and follow the steps - make sure that you keep the straps over the shoulders and not below or level of your child - this is important. (you will need to check this on a regular basis) adjustment of the straps is easy even with the seat installed - this is a huge bonus for us - I hate to take car seats in and out of cars - some are better than others (I had the cuts and bruises) but this is not the case with this seat.

I highly recommend that you consider this as a chair for your child, before you buy go look in the store you will see what I am talking about when it comes to construction and features - Amazon was the best price we could find this chair for.

In addition regardless of which chair you do purchase ALWAYS ALWAYS register the purchase with the manufacturer - this is the only way you will know about any product recalls - we did this with another brand and had to get two new bases for our non-britax car seat - it costs nothing to register.

Awesome read

Pretty Dark Nothing Heather Reid

Pretty Dark Nothing Heather Reid

Read this book in 2 sittings basically. Stayed up till 6am finishing it, because it was so good!

The story is about Quinn who had vivid nightmares when she sleeps, now she doesn't sleep anymore because her nightmares bled into reality. Enter Aaron, mysterious hot guy who seems to can't get her out of his mind. Lots of high school drama, and I wonder why every character in the story seems like a jerk sometimes... there were TONS of misunderstandings between the characters, but that's what makes it real! I was at the edge of my seat rooting for Aaron and Quinn, but Quinn seems to mess everything up, which annoyed me.

And the ending... it was such a cliffhanger!!! Lots of things comes to light in the last few pages of the book.... I literally can't wait till the sequel comes out! Still jittery from staying up so late reading this book!!! Oh Aaron... I want to know what happens to him!!!

Expensive, but worth it

BABYBJORN Babysitter Balance Air Black

BABYBJORN Babysitter Balance Air Black

We love this bouncy chair! It's a bit big for our newborn, but he is still able to use it especially if it is in the most reclined position which supports his head. The best part is that it matches our flooring so we can leave it out all the time without having ugly baby items cluttering our living space. It is very portable so we'll take it outside, in the office, or in the bathroom where he can be with us while we get a few things accomplished. We've found that you can secure the loops of a taggie blanket to the buttons which gives him something interesting to look at. He liked this so much that I made him more just for this purpose.
The mesh backing seemed like a good idea for the Texas climate, and it appears to have been a good choice. We haven't had any stains on it yet or had to wash it, so I can't say how it cleans.
The amount of bounce it has seems appropriate too. You can aid your baby's rocking by lightly tapping your foot on the frame. Even the cats rock him when they walk by!

Truly a wonderful item

Solvit Standard Tagalong Booster Medium

Solvit Standard Tagalong Booster Medium

I agonized a bit over what car booster seat to go with for my 4-pound Chihuahua, Periwinkle. After reading a wealth of reviews, I chose the Solvit Tagalong Pet Booster Seat. Given her small stature and light weight, I opted for the medium size.

Assembly was a breeze. Excluding the time it took to unpack the seat and review the instructions, I spent only 1-2 minutes tops putting the seat together and then attaching it to the seat in my car. Both straps (one goes around the headrest, the other goes around the back of the seat) are really easy to adjust for the best possible fit. Since the straps attach to the seat and can be removed, you can adjust their fit then simply unclip them so you don't have to readjust the straps every single time you need to use it. The liner can also be removed for easy cleaning, if needed.

The seat is snug, sturdy, and didn't sag or get misshapen even with Periwinkle fussing around trying to figure out which direction she wanted to face. A few times she got really excited and wanted to jump out to see me, but the safety strap and her harness combined did their job and she was gently and safely restrained.

This is a fantastic product and feels like it's made out of high quality materials. I would recommend this to anyone with a dog that likes to go for car rides.

Great

Inglesina 2013 Stroller Lampone Purple

Inglesina 2013 Stroller Lampone Purple

Right out of the box it was practically already put together. Though the manual only had pictures rather than written instructions it didn't make a difference since common sense was all needed to put this stroller together. The reclining seat is perfect and easy to adjust with her in it. My daughter was able to sleep in it while I shopped. The color was slightly different than the pictures (more of a deep burgundy purple than royal purple in pics) however I love it just the same. The umbrella hood is great because it covered her face completely not only from the sun but also from the lights of the store while she slept. Easy open and close, very lightweight and the side handle made carrying it even more convenient. I love the peekaboo window and fact the u can close it to keep the sun from baby's head. Pushes smoothly and the handles are perfect for holding your diaper bag and other light purchases. I can go on and on about this stroller bottom line if you're looking for a lightweight umbrella stroller this is the perfect one... At least it was for us.

Infinitely Entertaining

Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace

Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace

I don't want to try to summarize what I love about this novel. This is my favorite novel and so that would take a while and probably waste your time rehashing what other people have said better. Instead I'll try to address a few of the more common complaints I see here:

The first is that there is no closure. This is correct to some degree, since many of the storylines in the novel - Hal's addiction, Gately's and Pemulis' fates, the Quebecois insurgency, etc. - aren't explicitly resolved. There are hints of what happens if you'd like to sleuth these out (I was lucky enough to read it shortly before Infinite Summer, a sort of online book club for this, started, and luckily got to see the theories of cleverer people), but I'd argue that even those are unnecessary. The way I like to describe it is that Infinite Jest is too good to be constrained by a plot. Instead, these storylines are really just avenues for exploring some very interesting concepts: addiction, achievement, depression, loneliness. Moreover, these avenues are populated by some very well-drawn characters, some of whom are pretty repulsive but most of whom are so deftly fleshed-out that you can somehow empathize with them anyway. And momentarily inhabiting such realistic characters (narration is often limited-omniscient, albeit confined to a variety of different characters at different times) is such a rich experience that, to me at least, it more than makes up for a scant plot.

The second is that the book is hard to read. This is true in parts, and there are more than a few words in here whose meanings I still don't know. There are a lot of footnotes, a common theme in DFW's work, which can be bothersome but not horribly so. The beginning is especially slow going because the characters are unfamiliar and confusing and, especially if you haven't read any of DFW's work (I strongly suggest reading some of his essays before this), you may not have the reservoir of goodwill to get you through. But once you find your footing about a hundred pages almost all of the remainder is very readable. Sure, there are portions that can be pretty technical. There's an exposition of a Risk-like children's game that involves a jargon-packed discussion of nuclear warfare, for one, but I enjoy taking these digressions to learn a bit about the subject, and at any rate they're often skimmable if you so choose. More prevalent, to me, were sections of wicked humor. Infinite Jest has a lot of hilarious exchanges, events and descriptions. As an experiment, I looked for the funniest thing I could find in 10 seconds, and here that is: someone is selling sterile urine to beat a drug test, urine that's described as "warm pale innocent childish urine that's produced in needly little streams and the only G/M scan that it couldn't pass would be like an Ovaltine scan or something", and this sort of thing is all over the book (though it's a little more scarce toward the end). Real, laugh-out-loud humor. Sometimes broad, sometimes subtle. There's also a lot of exploration of how people think and behave, which is much more realistically felt and appreciated than I can describe, and which draws more empathy from me than any other novel I've read. At any rate, I think the best thing I can say about this book's readability is that I still pull it off the shelf occasionally, just to read a random section and either laugh or savor its ideas and prose, or all of those things. Not because I want to impress anyone; not because it's some book-medicine, required but unpleasant; but because it's really pleasurable to read.

So to summarize, if you want a novel that will introduce a problem, detail its solution, and tie up any loose ends (in other words, a conventional story), you may want to look elsewhere. But if you want descriptive prose, sharp humor and emotion, and a thoughtful exploration of a very wide variety of subjects and experiences and characters, give this a try.
